The Blue Flag beaches, purpose-built tourist resorts and cities crammed with history, holidays to Bulgaria cater for every visitor need. Bulgaria's long Black Sea coastline is the country's summertime playground, attracting not just Bulgarians but tourists from across Europe and beyond. The big, purpose-built resorts here have become serious rivals to those of Spain and Greece, while independent travellers will find plenty to explore away from the parasols and jet skis.
Europe’s rising star
As far as holidays go, Bulgaria is on the verge of great things. It might not be as well-known as the Greek Islands or the Spanish coast at the moment, but that’s likely to change over the next decade or so. With its gorgeous Black Sea coast and all-singing, all-dancing tourist resorts, the country has just as much to offer as its European counterparts.
Sunny Beach
Sunny Beach wins the popularity contest here. This purpose-built resort leaves holidaymakers wanting for nothing. The 18-kilometre stretch of sand is accessorised with everything from football pitches and massage huts to fairgrounds and market stalls. And the after-dark scene is nothing short of legendary.
Golden Sands
Golden Sands does exactly what it says on the tin. Set in Bulgaria's wild Varna region, the resort has a Blue Flag beach worthy of the resort’s name and a host of luxury hotels – along with access to lots of Bulgaria’s best attractions. You've got highlights like a monastery carved into a cliff, natural thermal springs and the country’s only desert.
Obzor and Nessebar
If you prefer your holidays with a bigger dose of peace and quiet, consider Obzor. Days at this small seaside town revolve around the 6-kilometre beach, while evenings usually play out in laid-back restaurants and bars. If history is your top priority, meanwhile, head to Nessebar, where you can nosy around the UNESCO-protected old town.
